Current information about the Corona Virus (COVID-19)

The HBK starts the summer semester 2020 with digital teaching

Due to the corona pandemic, the service of HBK Braunschweig is only possible to a limited extent.

The management of the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig (HBK) assesses the current situation regarding the spread of the corona virus (COVID-19) on a daily basis and decides, after consultation with the crisis management team, how the HBK can best react to the situation. We regularly inform students, lecturers and staff on this website and by e-mail about the measures that are being taken in response to the current situation.

We firmly reject any form of discrimination based on the corona virus. Although the corona virus is more widespread in certain areas than elsewhere, this does not in any way justify the assumption that people from these areas necessarily carry and spread the corona virus. We call on all relatives and guests of the HBK Braunschweig to be prudent.

FAQ:

1. General information

1.1 What does the HBK pandemic plan provide for?

In the HBK pandemic plan, three further stages for restricted operation are defined in addition to regular operation:

Level 0 (normal operation)
Level 1 (restricted operation)
Level 2 (emergency operation)
Level 3 (discontinuation of university operations)

Since 20.04.2020, HBK has returned from emergency operation (stage 2) to restricted operation (stage 1). Further details can be found in the pandemic plan adopted by the Presiding Board on 10.03.2020 and supplemented on 17.03.2020.

Hygiene concept of the HBK Braunschweig

In order to minimize the risk of the corona virus spreading during the restricted period of university operation, a comprehensive framework hygiene concept has been developed, which specifies temporary measures for infection protection against SARS-CoV-2.

The hygiene plan is binding and valid for all parts of the HBK building.

The current version is published here: (currently only in german)

1.2 What happens if I test positive for the corona virus?

The disease COVID-19, which is caused by the coronavirus, is one of the notifiable diseases according to the Infection Protection Act. The doctor treating the patient must report the illness to the responsible health authority, which can order a ban on work or quarantine.

The Presidium asks for an additional notification to Dr. Rainer Heuer, Full-time Vice President and head of the crisis team at corona@hbk-bs.de.

All sessions and meetings at the HBK premises are cancelled until further notice. If necessary, they can be held via videoconferencing.

3.3 What do I have to do if I am quarantined by the health authority?

Here two situations must be distinguished:

  • You are sick and in quarantine: You will receive a sick note. The usual regulations for continued payment of wages in case of illness apply.
  • You are not ill and quarantine is ordered as a precaution: You will discuss possibilities of working from your home office with your supervisor or supervisors.

In both cases, you must inform your employer about the quarantine ordered by the health office.

3.4 May I start my planned business trip?

Business trips are generally prohibited until further notice. All business trip authorisations already granted are revoked.

Should it be necessary to travel for business reasons, the University Management must be given written reasons for this in writing. Permission is granted exclusively by the university management.

4. study and teaching

4.1 Will courses take place at the HBK in the summer semester 2020?

Yes, the apprenticeship started for the most part on 20.04.2020 with virtual formats and can be offered until 20.09.2020.

Teachers will keep their students continuously informed about the design of their courses by e-mail.

An insight into possible tools for digital teaching can be found on the homepage at: http://hbk-bs.de/studium/beratung-und-service/lernen-und-lehren/

Statement of the Conference of Ministers of Culture (KMK)

4.2 Will the summer semester be extended due to the later start?

This semester, the lecture times will be flexibly adapted by the study programmes to the respective requirements. The courses of study, in which presence in workshops, project rooms and studios is indispensable, are shifting their presence teaching backwards within the semester times.

4.3 When will the HBK be opened for classroom teaching?

The HBK is opened for classroom teaching if and as soon as the health hazard assessment allows it. Whether and when this will happen is currently not foreseeable. Against the background of this uncertainty, presence-based teaching content should, where possible and permissible, take place digitally or be postponed to later semesters.

4.4 Are there any effects on the coming winter semester due to the changed conditions of the summer semester

As things stand at present, the winter semester will probably begin as planned on 01.10.2020 and the lecture period as planned on 19.10.2020.

4.5 I could not validate my HBK-Card. How can I still use my Semesterticket?

In April and May 2020, instead of the HBK-Card, you may use a printed certificate of matriculation and a valid official photo identification (personal/passport/residence title). This applies to both the VRB and the national semester ticket.

Current information can be found on the AStA website.

4.6 Do excursions take place?

No, excursions are currently not possible and will probably be cancelled completely in the summer semester.

4.7 What possibilities do teachers have to set up online services and where do they receive support?

We are currently working intensively on possible support formats. An overview is available on the homepage at https://www.hbk-bs.de/studium/beratung-und-service/lernen-und-lehren/angebote-fuer-lehrende/.

4.8 What is absolutely necessary for participation in online offers?

  • the access data of the HBK account (user name, password)
  • the access data for the Stud.IP of the HBK (Stud.IP is urgently necessary for the participation and administration of courses!)

4.9 Are there hardship regulations for students?

The university management, insofar as it has any influence on this, is committed to ensuring that students are not disadvantaged by the special situation of the 2020 summer semester. However, it is bound by national regulations, e.g. on the semester count or long-term study fees. Decisions on hardship cases can only be made on the basis of individual applications.

4.10 Do students still receive BAföG?

Students who are dependent on benefits under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) should not suffer any financial disadvantages if your educational institution is temporarily closed or the start of the semester is postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Press release of the BMBF

- Joint press release by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Student Union (DSW)

- Financial support for students by the KfW

The provision of a nationwide emergency aid fund for students is advocated by the university management of the HBK.

- Special fund and emergency aid for cultural workers from the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and VGH-Stiftung (read more)

- Hardship fund of the city of Braunschweig for cultural workers and small businesses (read more)

 - Students can obtain advice from the social counselling service of the Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen, especially on the following points;

  • Assistance and information on financial security for your studies
  • Advice on housing, authorities and insurance issues
  • Advice on pregnancy and childcare options

"In our social counselling sessions, we discuss further financing options with the students, such as scholarships and student loans, as well as liquidity assistance such as the suspension of rent payments or deferral of payments from health insurance companies. We also have a fund from which we can grant loans to individual students in cases of particular hardship".
