Research and teaching at the IMW are concerned with cultural fields where the media play an important role, especially media theory and history, analogue and digital media, gender studies and the history and theory of technology.
Many modules are organised jointly with the communication studies and media technology departments at Technische Universität Braunschweig. The TU Braunschweig is also co-responsible for the degree programme Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies.
The Institute of Media Studies is also responsible for administering the Master of Arts in Media Studies, which is taught with a focus on cultural studies.
