The Institute of Performing Arts and Education specialises in research and teaching in practical artistic skills and theatre pedagogy on both a theoretical and practical level. It administers and delivers the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degree programmes in the Performing Arts and is a centre of expertise and academic development in the field.
At the IPK, we base our approach on a broad definition of theatre, in which performative, interactive and immersive formats are given equal weighting with more traditional text-based theatre. Our taught courses explore the history of theatre and equip students with a theoretical understanding of theatre and performance, while also strongly emphasising the importance of positioning our own approach(es) to theatre pedagogy within a social and political context.
The Institute of Performing Arts and Education defines itself as an educational institute which bears a political and social responsibility within the framework of a university setting. This responsibility means, among other things, that we encourage students and staff to see their own artistic and pedagogic practice as a democratically orientated, social practice, continually interrogating their own position within a social and political context.
The IPK works closely with a number of different cultural organisations in the city of Braunschweig such as the LOT-Theater Braunschweig and the Staatstheater Braunschweig.
