Teacher training for Art Education at the HBK Braunschweig is directed towards those who would like to teach art, based on advanced and artistic practice, in secondary and comprehensive schools in order to make aesthetic experience and access to art, architecture and design available to the pupils.

In the first six semesters of the eight-semester bachelor’s course, the emphasis is on the study of Fine Art. In the basic and specialized classes, the students develop, observe and discuss the results of their work together with the students in the Fine Art course. They will become acquainted with the different workshops and work techniques and compile their own exhibitions and communication concepts.
Accompanying seminars in communicating art and art pedagogics, and in art science and media science are aimed at a multi-layered dialogue with all the questions and contents important in art instruction. Internships in schools and museums enable preliminary communicating experiences and create a starting point for one’s own projects.
The study of the second subject (German, English or history) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig begins in the seventh semester. Altogether it has a lesser scope than the art course and is completed with a teaching qualification for instruction up to year 11.

And afterwards?

If a teaching position in the subjects art and German, English or history at a secondary or comprehensive school is the objective, a bachelor’s degree is the basic prerequisite for the subsequent master’s degree and later admission to the preparatory teacher training for schools.

A number of steps are necessary for application to the HBK Braunschweig. In these steps the students prove their “special artistic talent”. This is based either on the successful participation in Frühstart Kunst (www.frü or through application with a portfolio and a successful interview.

For this application process, three steps are required:

1. Online application via the HBK Braunschweig website

2. Submission of the application documents by 15 March (date of receipt!)

3. Submission of portfolio (personally or by post)

Note: The portfolio must have been received at the university by 31 March. Information and deadlines for personally handing in the portfolio will be posted
on the website.

The portfolio (maximum size DIN A0) must contain 20 to 30 of your own works in the original from freely selected topics such as drawing, painting, graphics/print, sculpture, collage, montage, photography, prints (insofar as these are the technical base of the artistic works), film/video or sound sculpture/sound installation.

Application emphasis on film/video
At least 1 – 3 films or videos (no length guideline)

Application emphasis on sound sculpture/ sound installation
At least 1 – 3 audio-visual concepts with freely selected media emphasis

Altogether, the works should express what moves the applicants and which topics they would like to pursue. The application should express the applicant’s
personal and artistic approach — where possible departing from the beaten track — to investigating the freely chosen tasks.

The HBK Braunschweig offers portfolio counselling at regular intervals.
