Olympia Bukkakis: YOU ARE TOO MUCH
Excess and exaggeration tend to make the middle class uncomfortable. At the same time aesthetics and attitudes that lean into the fantastic, the overdone, the outrageous, are key to the cultural production and understanding of a number of different minoritised groups. Camp and melodrama have a long and contested history in queer and trans communities and art. With reference to two pieces recently performed in Berlin (Bad Girls from Oozing Gloop & Anali Goldberg and Melodrama Suits Her by Tumay Kilincel) Olympia will outline the potentials, limitations and joys of camp aesthetics. The format will be part (performance) lecture and part workshop, with exercises to help the students gain a practical understanding of camp production.
